How Do You Count Scores in Padel?

Jan. 13, 2025

If you’re new to padel tennis, understanding its scoring system is essential. Padel’s rules are similar to tennis, with a few unique twists that make it exciting. This guide explains the Padel scoring system, highlights the nuances of singles and doubles, and offers strategies to dominate key moments in matches.

Count Scores in Padel

Padel Scoring Basics

Padel follows the same point progression as tennis:

● Game: Points are scored as 15, 30, 40, game.

● Set: At deuce (40-40), a team must win two consecutive points to take the game.

● Tie-break: The first team wins a set to win 6 games with a 2-game lead. If the score reaches 6-6, a tiebreak is played, where the first to 7 points (with a 2-point lead) wins the set.

● Length of the match: Most padel matches are played as best of three sets, where the first team to win two sets wins the match.

Special Rules:

● Glass Walls and Fences: Players can hit the ball that bounces off the glass or fences, but each player must hit the ball once before returning it. If the ball can still be hit back normally after touching the wall, the game continues.

● Serving after a tie: If a serve error occurs after a tie or the ball cannot be returned, the game will be suspended and the serving player will be changed.

Singles vs. Doubles Rules

While the scoring system remains the same for both formats, the gameplay differs:

● Doubles: The standard format in Padel, involving two players per team. Communication and teamwork are critical, especially when rotating positions and covering the court.

● Singles: Played on a narrower court designed specifically for one-on-one play. Singles games are often faster-paced and require a sharp focus on shot placement and endurance.

Key Strategies for Winning Important Points

● Dominate the Tiebreak: Tiebreaks are high-pressure moments. Players switch serve every two points, and the first to reach 7 points (with a 2-point lead) wins. Staying composed and minimizing errors is crucial.

● Control the Net: In doubles, teams that take and maintain the net position often dominate. Use volleys and smashes effectively to keep your opponents on the defensive.

● Exploit the Walls: One of the unique features of Padel is its use of walls. Practice angled shots and rebounds to put pressure on your opponents.

● Target Weak Links: In doubles, identify the weaker player and focus your shots on them. In singles, force your opponent into uncomfortable positions by varying shot height, speed, and spin.

Knowing the rules and scoring system is more than just a formality—it shapes your game strategy. By understanding the flow of points and when to apply pressure, you can improve your focus and confidence during matches. Whether you’re playing casually or competing professionally, mastery of scoring is key to success.
